Headmaster Lisa Gilbert-Smith meets with Dearborn families and students at their June 23rd Community Meeting.

Dear Dearborn Stem Academy Families and Students:

I am honored to have been selected to serve as the Head of School at the Dearborn, beginning July 1, 2015.  The Dearborn is a very special school with a long legacy in the Boston Public Schools.  I look forward to leading the school to new heights with the introduction of the STEM focus and continuing to build the 6-12 model.  I am aware that there have been many changes over the past two years and my first task (after meeting all of you!) will be to ensure that starting Day 1 in September of 2015, the school opens staffed with an excellent team of teachers and support staff who are united in the commitment to provide the best possible environment for all students to learn.

My passion for ensuring that all of our students have the opportunity to receive a quality education was instilled in me from a very early age. I grew up in Mattapan in a single parent household.  No one in my family had ever had the opportunity to earn a college degree; many did not graduate from high school. My mother truly believed that obtaining a college education was the only way that one could guarantee themselves increased life choices and opportunities. She fought fiercely for me to obtain a good education in the Boston Public Schools, insisting that it was the school system’s responsibility to educate all students well.  I share my mother’s belief and have dedicated the last twenty years of my life to fighting for our students to have educational experiences that will allow them to graduate from high school ready for college and careers.

I take this position very seriously. Leading a school is an incredible responsibility. I have spent the last six years as Headmaster of Another Course to College in Brighton. I am proud of the work that we have done there.  ACC is a highly selected school in BPS. We consistently have a wait list at every grade level.  More importantly, our students are thriving. We have sent students to Harvard University, Boston College, Boston University, Northeastern University, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Boston, Dartmouth and Lowell as well as a whole host of other four-year and two-year institutions.  I feel proud when I walk in the front door of ACC and see what we have accomplished.

I will work hard to ensure that I am doing the very best that I can to create and maintain a warm, safe and nurturing school environment at the Dearborn Stem Academy, one that will allow our students to have the opportunity to reach their fullest potential. I will need your help. It is critical that parents, students, staff and community members partner together to reach our shared goals. Toward that end, I encourage you to feel free to contact me to discuss any questions or concerns that you might have now or in the future.   I look forward to a wonderful school year!

Warmly,

Lisa Gilbert-Smith
